One group teamed up with Urban Promise, Wilmington's Camp Promise after-school program, to host read-alouds featuring African-American and Latino children's literature. They hope to promote literacy by fundraising and purchasing children's books with which the program's attendees could readily identify.Last week, they hosted two read-alouds in Wilmington. "Our visits went really well; we brought a whole bunch of books to read, we played games, and had dinner/snack with the kids." -Melissa Cobb, UD senior Fundraising
This group also sold 50/50 raffle tickets to raise money to buy UrbanPromise children culturally relevant books!
Over 800 $1 tickets were sold, and since the winning raffle ticket was blank (simply a monetary donation,) Urban Promise gets ALL of the money! Thats $800+ to buy new books! The group is now finalizing an annotated bibliography of children's literature that they are going to buy. The group gave away free books on the green to attract students and get them to donate to their cause! |
